Finger Waving The Hair

Today in my practical lesson we focused on finger waving the hair using the wet setting technique and the heated rollers. Finger waves are a Vintage hair style trend that can be done on a variety of hair types. Shorter hair looks beautiful in finger waves, but even those with longer hair can don the style too! A typical finger-wave style begins with wet hair and creates a wavy effect throughout stands as the end result.

Wet Setting

- Start by brushing through hair thoroughly    removing any knots and tangles. Then lightly wet the hair with a spray bottle and comb through from front to back creating a slight C shape along the hair line. Do not soak the hair too much. Rub a small amount of gel into the hair to ensure it keeps it shape.

- Comb hair back against the hair line at a 45 degree angle creating a large C section and place a clip right along the centre to hold the shape.

- Keep doing this over the hole of the hair areas around the face.

- Put on a cloth with air holes around the head and use a hair dryer on the head until it is completely dry.

  • Take towel off and part the back of the hair into two layers, clipping the top layer up for the moment.
  • Plait the bottom layer and create a bun shape with the plait.
  • Un-clip the top layer of hair and tie it into a pony tail. Pull the hair tie down to the ends of the hair and fold underneath clipping it to the bun to create a bob.
  • Curl any loose hair from the sides and pin them into the side of the bob to create a better shape.
  • Hair spray hole of the head thoroughly to ensure the style lasts.

Finger waving was popular with women in Berlin during 1920's-30's so that they could create a short bob illusion rather than actually cutting their hair like many did. It has also come back into fashion over the past few years with proof below of Celebrities rocking it!
